Do you know there are approximately 500 species of bees
in Ohio? Bees are beneficial insects that pollinate flowering plants by transferring pollen from one flower to another. This
is an important factor in food production and reproduction of the plant.
How To Identify Bees From Their "Mimics" All bees have three (3) body segments (parts). A head, the thorax, and the abdomen. The head is where the large multi-faceted
eyes are located. also long slender antennae, and cutting mouthparts are found. Then thorax is the middle segment where
the wings and legs are attached. Last is the abdomen, for which female bees ends in a sting. Unique to female bees are what
looks like dense broom bristles called pollen-carrying hairs. These may be found on the rear legs or on the underside of the
abdomen. Some though, will carry pollen in an almost hairless, flatten pollen basket on the rear legs.
