BELMONT COUNTY was established
September 7, 1801, by proclamation of Gov. St. Clair, being the ninth county formed in the Northwestern Territory.Residents
named the county Belmont after the French term for "beautiful mountain.". It is a very hilly and picturesque tract. Belmont
county was one of the earliest settled within the State of Ohio, and the scene of several desperate encounters with the Indians.
About 1790, or perhaps two or three years later, a fort called Dillie’s fort was erected on the west side of the Ohio,
opposite Grave creek. Thousands of settlers migrated westward through Belmont County along Zane's Trace. The National Road
also passed through the county. Quakers were among the county's first residents and many of these people became outspoken
critics of slavery
