Bat Entry Point - Bat Guano on Roofing
batenty.jpg

Sometimes the only evidence of the presence of bats in a building will be an accumulation of droppings in one area of the attic, or droppings and rubmarks on siding at the bat entry opening. To confirm their presence and locate the openings used by bats’ in the warmer months, observe from the outside for bats leaving in the evening, from one-half hour before untill one-half hour after sundown. Once you have determined the principal entry points, you may seal all of the openings and crevices of over 3/8” not used by bats. Because bats cannot gnaw to enlarge an opening, a variety of materials can be used to seal an opening, including: l/4” hardware cloth, fly screen, sheet metal, wood, caulking, expandable polyurethane foam, or fiberglass insulation, (But not in June or July when the young are likely to be inside).Bats are susceptible to rabies, a serious viral disease that results in death if untreated. If you are bitten by a possibly rabid animal, you must immediately consult a doctor for a series of injections; there is no cure once symptoms emerge

When dealing with the exclusion of bats it is advisable to hire a professional who will be able to remove ALL THE BATS without danger to you, secure your residence, sanitize the area affected, and if needed remove and replaced your contaminated insulation.

Exclusion is the ONLY effective solution for permanently removing bats from buildings. Trapping and relocating is ineffective since bats have excellent homing instincts and simply return, even when released at great distances. The use of pesticides against bats is illegal and counterproductive.

Poisoning attempts seldom kill all the bats, leaving sickened bats that emerge, become grounded, and may be retrieved by children and pets. Poisoning also fails to address the real issue – that bats are gaining access to your structure in the first place. As bats are mammals, anything harmful to them will also be harmful to you and your pets.

Naphthalene, the active ingredient in moth balls, and ultrasonic devices are often promoted as bat repellents. However, ultrasonic devices are ineffective against bats, and to be effective, naphthalene must be used in such large quantities that it poses a significant health hazard to humans.

If you have one or more bats in the living area of your home, we can come remove them. However, this usually is a sign of more bats roosting in your attic or similar area.First, Let me assure you that most bats do not have rabies (less than 1%) But it is possible for bats to carry rabies.Next, please be assured they are not attracted to hair and will not try to fly into your hair.Bats are also not blind as many people think they are. They have good vision, but they have excellent hearing and use it to locate their food. It is called Echolocation. Why are bats good? A single bat can eat 600 insects in an hour. (Forget the bug lights; let's get some bats!) Bats are not bad creatures in general. In fact they are excellent for the environment. However, they can cause a serious issue if they decide to roost in your home. Their droppings can pile up quickly and can cause a number of diseases. Histoplasmosis being the main diseases associated with guano. If bats roost in your attic, you need to get them out as quickly as possible.  They can cause many problems with smell and parasites as well. It is important to have bats removed correctly for them as well as for you. YES, it can be expensive, but much less expensive than a human life.
